Call for Candidates: Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CJLACS)
The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) is seeking candidates who wish to be considered as the next Editor-in-Chief for its interdisciplinary flagship journal, the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CJLACS).
Founded in 1976, CJLACS is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes distinguished research and debates on Latin America and the Caribbean. It makes an important contribution to furthering knowledge about these regions in Canada and around the world. It publishes original research in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
Candidates should be a member of CALACS; hold a tenured position at a Canadian university; possess recognized academic qualifications in the field of Latin American and/or Caribbean studies, as demonstrated by an established record of scholarly contributions; and be willing to actively cultivate existing and novel perspectives in this field. They should be functionally bilingual (in English, French, and/or Spanish). Knowledge of Portuguese is an asset. The ideal candidate will have prior editorial experience.
The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for sustaining and supervising an effective editorial team and has the primary responsibility of managing the timely review of manuscripts and sustaining the journal’s interdisciplinary and multilingual identity. The Editor-in-Chief is ex officio a member of the CALACS Board of Directors and reports to it. The Editor’s responsibilities are exclusive of the duties of the Managing Editor, whose role is to manage the finances of the journal and to maintain an ongoing relationship with Taylor and Francis, the journal’s publisher.
To be considered for this non-paid position, candidates must submit plans for hosting the journal at a new home institution and must demonstrate their ability to obtain from the home institution some resources for the journal’s operations (e.g. funding, course releases, office space, etc.).
CALACS anticipates a transition period beginning in the fall of 2022, during which the incoming Editor will work closely with the present Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief. The successful candidate will gradually assume full responsibilities beginning on July 1, 2023. The term of service is four years and is renewable.
All enquiries and proposals should be submitted electronically to Prof. Julián Durazo Herrmann (durazo.julian@uqam.ca). A candidate’s file should consist of a letter of intention, a CV, and a description of the support to be provided by the host institution (in either English or French).
Complete proposals are due by July 31, 2022.
