2020 CALACS Graduate Essay Prize
Expressions of Intent to Submit due by February 15, 2020
Final essay due: March 1, 2020

The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) calls for submissions for the 2020 Graduate Essay Prize to be awarded at the 2020 CALACS Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, held May 20 to 22, 2020 at the University of Ottawa. This award recognizes the most outstanding essay presented by a graduate student at the 2020 CALACS Congress. 


  • Applicants must be registered in a graduate program at a recognized university and be CALACS student members.
  • Applicants must present their paper at the 2020 CALACS Congress.
  • The paper must be unpublished and not yet approved for publication.
  • Co-authorships will be accepted as long as the students are affiliated with community organizations or are presented together with community researchers. The co-authors can not be professors or have already obtained a PhD.
  • The recipient is expected to attend Congress and the Award Ceremony. While students are encouraged to apply to CALACS for financial assistance to attend the Congress through the Congress website, these funds are limited and are thus not guaranteed.
  • The applicant may be registered in a masters or doctoral program inside or outside of Canada. Doctoral students must not have defended their dissertation prior to the submission deadline.

Application process:

  1. An abstract of the paper must first be submitted to and accepted by the CALACS 2020 Congress Organizing Committee, respecting the deadlines on the general Call for Papers.
  2. Applicants should indicate their intention to submit an essay for consideration by the Awards jury by writing to grad.essay.prize(at) Expressions of interest should be submitted by February 15, 2020.
  3. Papers should be submitted electronically through the CALACS website ( Applicants must log in to their member account, navigate to USER ACCOUNT > MY SUBMISSIONS, and under AWARDS, click on Graduate Essay to access the submission form.  You must upload an anonymous copy of the essay and a title page with your name, program and university affiliation as a separate document. Students may be asked to submit a proof of student status after the essay's submission. The deadline for receipt of final papers is March 1, 2020. We will notify participants of the results on April 15, 2020.

Guidelines for papers:

  • Papers should be no longer than 20 double-spaced pages including bibliography, footnotes, figures and appendices.
  • Papers should be submitted using standard margins in 12-point font with appropriate referencing in Word format.
  • Papers will be evaluated following a double-blind review process, thus please submit 1) a title page with your name and affiliation and 2) an anonymous copy of the essay.
  • Papers may be submitted in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish. 

The evaluation committee will not review papers that do not conform to these guidelines: all papers not responding to these criteria will be automatically disqualified.
